Underwriting Programme Overview

Chartis is a world leading property-casualty and general insurance organisation serving more than 70 million clients around the world. Underwriting is the foundation of our business.

After two years you’ll be ready for your role of Underwriter, whilst performing many of the duties within your first year and the exciting long term career prospects reflect Chartis’s standing as one of the biggest players in the insurance sector.

You will take on a position within our UK underwriting operation – in year one we’ll assign you to one of our major Product Lines, such as: Property, Liabilities, Financial Lines, Energy, Trade Credit, Commercial Combined or Marine. You will develop a solid working knowledge of underwriting principles, learnt through self-study, classroom, distance learning and

structured on-the-job training. In year two there will be the opportunity to move to a different part of the business and build your career within that area. Should you choose to stay within an underwriting role in year two, you will be given the opportunity to undertake a three month secondment as part of the programme.

Upon completion of your structured training, your career will continue to progress as you learn and grow with the Company. The emphasis on your professional and personal development will remain a focus as you continue to work closely with profit centre managers and Chartis insurance school trainers. In addition, we will support you to gain a professional qualification. Looking long term, a huge range of opportunities could open up in the UK, or even overseas.


Actuarial Programme Overview

Actuarial is a critical function for the company, having a significant impact on the pricing, reserving and capital modelling of all lines of business.

Actuarial in Chartis

Actuarial is an integral part of the way Chartis conducts business. You will have the opportunity to understand different lines of business, countries in which Chartis conducts business and a range of actuarial disciplines.

Reserving: the actuarial department takes the lead in the analysis of historic data and recent trends in order to establish appropriate levels of reserves to cover the expected cost of claims.

Pricing: working in partnership with profit centres across various countries, the actuarial department provides advice and support in respect of understanding portfolio trends and related pricing decisions.

Capital Modelling: combining analytical skills, actuarial modelling software and business knowledge, the actuarial department plays a leading role in the increasingly important task of modelling of Chartis’ risk and capital profile.

Our Chartis training scheme for Actuaries balances the key requirements of analytical excellence and strong communication skills by focusing on the development of technical skills and on providing development opportunities for communication, presentation and leadership skills. Opportunities exist at both a professional graduate and internship level.
