Injury:
This 41 year old lady complained of headaches and soft tissue pain in her neck, shoulders and back following a road traffic accident on As a result of her injuries, she was unable to remain in work. The file was referred to MR by the Insurer 5 days following her accident.
Rehabilitation:
The case manager contacted this lady on the day of referral, received her consent within 4 days and immediately arranged 6 sessions of private physiotherapy as per the GP’s recommendations.
Her initial progress was slow and she continued to report of severe headaches. She was reviewed by her GP who recommended a cervical MRI scan and advised her to stop attending physiotherapy until the results were obtained. The Case Manager arranged an immediate private scan and forwarded a copy of the report to her GP. On review of this lady, she was recommended to recommence physiotherapy treatment for a further 6 sessions. This was then arranged by MR.
She progressed well with the second course of physiotherapy and reported that her headaches and injuries were resolving. She returned to work to her previous job three months post accident.
She continued with her physiotherapy along with her recommended swimming exercises. She completed a further 4 sessions of physio as recommended by her physiotherapist and she received full medical sign-off. The file was closed as she had remained in full time work and no further treatment had been recommended.
The Benefits:
Thanks to the intervention of Medical & Rehabilitation, this lady was able to avail of immediate physiotherapy treatment. By having direct communication with her medical treating practitioners, MR could assess the appropriate treatment required and co-ordinate it. She successfully returned to work 3 months following her accident.
The Insurer commented that the intervention of MR was very successful in this case. The claim was settled prior to The Injuries Board's assessment of the case. Therefore, no legal costs were incurred.
This case highlights how MR’s involvement can benefit both the injured party and the employer and insurers alike.
